Grok bots for email and Gmail

Email is the job people hand to Grok Bot first, and the connector that needs the most care. These templates triage inboxes, draft replies, clear out newsletters and watch for bills. Most only need to read; very few should ever send without you.

What it can access
Reads, sorts and drafts mail. Some can send.

Watch for: Prefer bots that draft rather than send, and say so in their own words. Connect one inbox, not all of them, and keep sending behind your yes.

What Email access allows

Checked against xAI's docs

Below: what a Gmail connection actually lets a Bot do, the safe way to set it up, and the approval rules to add before any routine touches your inbox.

How it connects. Through the Gmail or Outlook app in Connect apps, which signs in to one mailbox. Separately, Grok Bot can give your Bots their own address at mail.grokbot.com for receipts, sign-ups and newsletters, without touching your personal inbox.

It can read

Read risk: Medium
  • Search and read mail in the connected mailbox
  • Read one-time codes a site emails you, so the Bot can finish a sign-in
  • Bring an attachment onto the Bot's computer to work on

It can write

Write risk: High
  • Draft and send email
  • Apply labels
  • Attach files the Bot made to a draft
  • From the Bot's own address: send, reply and forward (routine email always waits as a draft)

Your inbox holds password resets, bank notices and other people's private messages, and Gmail's app can send as you. Grok Bot treats email from other people as information, not instructions, but a narrow setup is still your best protection.

Set up Email safely

  • Start with a template that says it's read-only or drafts only, and read its instructions before connecting.
  • Connect one mailbox. Gmail connects one at a time; disconnect it if a Bot shouldn't use it.
  • Remember every Bot on your account can use the connected mailbox.
  • Consider the Bot's own address for newsletters, receipts and sign-ups instead of your personal inbox.
  • Add an Ask first rule for sending before you turn on any routine.
  • A work Google account may need your IT admin to approve the app named Grok first.

Ask first rules to add before connecting

In Settings → General → Bot → Custom Rules, describe the action and choose Ask first.

Ask first before sending, forwarding or replying to any email.
Ask first before deleting, archiving or unsubscribing from anything.

Email questions

What can Grok Bot do with my Gmail?

With the Gmail app connected, a Bot can search and read mail, draft and send, and apply labels on that one mailbox. It can't do more than your account can. Every Bot on your account can use the connection, so add an Ask first rule for sending and disconnect Gmail when a Bot shouldn't use it.

Can I connect two Gmail accounts?

No. Gmail connects one mailbox at a time, so you can't keep a personal and a work mailbox connected together. To switch, disconnect the current mailbox and authorise the other. For receipts and newsletters, the Bot's own mail.grokbot.com address is a separate option that doesn't touch your inbox.

Can a Grok bot send email without asking me?

From your connected Gmail, a Bot can send once Auto Review allows it, unless an Ask first rule stops it, so add one. Email from the Bot's own address works differently: anything a routine writes waits as a draft until you press Send, and there's no option for unattended sending.

Can someone hijack my Bot by emailing it?

xAI says a Bot treats email from other people as information, not instructions, and instructions inside an email never count as your permission to send or act. That's a guard, not a guarantee, so keep sending behind approval. Some public templates specifically screen mail for hidden instructions aimed at AI assistants.
