Grok bots for Slack

Slack templates summarise channels, catch requests and post updates. Two things make Slack different: the app posts as you, and a Slack message can trigger a routine, which is the fastest way to burn a week's usage.

Watch for: A bot that posts in shared channels speaks for you. Start it in a private channel and widen access once you trust it.

What Slack access allows

Checked against xAI's docs

How it connects. Through the Slack app in Connect apps, which acts as the Slack user you connect. A Slack trigger that starts a routine is a separate connection on the Cursor account that owns the Bot.

It can read

Read risk: Medium
  • Read channels and messages your Slack user can see
  • Watch for mentions, phrases or reactions (as a routine trigger)

It can write

Write risk: High
  • Post as you, in channels your Slack user can post in

Posts come from you, not a separate bot, so a wrong message reads as yours. A trigger on any message in a busy channel runs often and spends usage on messages that don't need the Bot.

Set up Slack safely

  • Keep triggers narrow: one channel and one phrase, never "every message".
  • Tell the Bot to post drafts to you, not to the channel.
  • Connect only the workspace the job needs.
  • On a team, a shared Bot in Slack asks before using your personal accounts.

Ask first rules to add before connecting

In Settings → General → Bot → Custom Rules, describe the action and choose Ask first.

Ask first before posting or replying in any Slack channel or DM.

Slack questions

Does a Grok bot post in Slack as me?

Yes. The Slack app posts as the Slack user you connected, not as a separate bot account, and only in channels that user can post in. That's why posting should sit behind an Ask first rule. A Slack trigger that starts a routine is separate from the app and may need its own connection.
